Nevada volleyball falls to Boise State 3–1
Nevada only won one set on Oct. 3 at Boise.
In the first set, Nevada started off with two strong kills by senior right side hitter Kyla Waiters and sophomore outside hitter Reka Monteleone. Boise was able to hold Nevada at three points when sophomore outside hitter Kayly Pau had five kills, sophomore opposite hitter Makayla Hansen served an ace and senior setter Danielle Boss also contributed a kill. Freshman outside hitter Sia Liilii came back for Nevada with three kills, and both middle blockers, Sydney Petersen and Sydney Wyman, added one each. These kills, along with errors made by Boise, were unfortunately not enough to increase Nevada’s score for the win. Boise won this set 25–12.
Nevada had a couple of leads in the second set. The score was very back-and-forth, which made it a tough battle for each team. The first lead for Nevada was 9–8 after Petersen had two kills. Petersen and Pau carried each team with kills in the set. Petersen had five and Pau had three. The set went into extra points, but Nevada wound up taking the win, 26–24, after three consecutive kills.
Boise did not let Nevada win another set. Junior outside hitter Lauren Ohlinger had four kills and two blocks for Boise. With the only close score being a tie at 5–5, Nevada struggled to keep up. Boss had a four-streak service run for Boise, which led them to win 25–17.
The last set was hopeful for the Wolf Pack, but unfortunately they could not pull through. Ohlinger was able to bring Boise ahead after a kill and a four streak service run. Three Boise attack errors gave Nevada opportunities to gain points, but it wasn’t enough for a lead. Annie Kaminski got the last two points for Boise by kills and ended the game 25–20.
Both teams had a total amount of digs in the low forties. However, Boise had a stronger defense when it came to blocks with a total of 24 to Nevada’s six. The Wolf Pack struggled to find an opening on the court and through the block.
Nevada has yet to win a conference game, but their next chance is Oct. 7 against Colorado State at home.
